Sudanese National Basketball tournament

On the 19th and 20th December 2009  the National Sudanese Basketball Tournament  was held at Penrith Basketball Stadium, Cambridge Park. 24 teams from  Perth, Hobart, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra and Newcastle competed over 2 days with a large number of talent scouts observing the high calibre of play on show. Event organiser Mayor Chagai  spent time with Jane Nethery from Youthsafe devising a risk management plan for the event to ensure the safety of participants, volunteers, referees and spectators. Congratulations to STAR Basketball Recreation, Blacktown, the organisers of the event, for their efforts in making this tournament as safe as possible.

Newtown Jets Junior Rugby League Club
The Newtown Jets club attended SafeClub training in May 2009. After completing a risk assessment at the training they identified unsafe parking and road crossing conditions as areas of concern. When completing the risk treatment stage they realised the importance in working with the council appropriately to develop a crossing and erect appropriate signage. They organised with the council to address their concerns at a council meeting in November 2009. As a result of this action the council has agreed to look into the matter immediately.

The Alexandria Rovers Rugby League Club wins gold!
On the 13th November at the Sporting Injuries Committees 2009 Sports Safety Awards the Alexandria Rovers were awarded a gold medal for 'Outstanding Implementation & Adoption of Safe Sport Practices (club)'. After completing the SafeClub program the Rovers took their risk assessment seriously. In addition to documenting and implementing a comprehensive risk assessment program, the club campaigned to their local council to rectify their 8 metre high grandstand by installing a safety barrier. The club also appointed a sports safety officer and has sports safety as a standing item for all committee meetings. A great example of a club commited to safety at a community level!

SafeClub launch
SafeClub was officially launched on 25th June 2009 with the support of the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation. Over 40 people representing sport from across NSW attended the luncheon launch to hear how SafeClub makes safety easy for community sport. A presentation from SafeClub’s Jane Nethery and Kristy Abbott included an overview of the program and the research evidence while Michelle Hanley from Football NSW covered the benefits of SafeClub from a sport perspective. Sports from across NSW are now signing up to partner with SafeClub to make their sport safer.
