On the 13th November at the Sporting Injuries Committee’s Sports Safety awards, the Alexandria Rovers Rugby League club were awarded a gold medal for 'Outstanding Implementation & Adoption of Safe Sport Practices (club)' receiving $1500 worth of sporting goods from Peter Wynn’s Sport as part of their prize. South Juniors Rugby League Association organised SafeClub training for clubs within their association in May 2009. Perry Johnstone attended this training on behalf of the Alexandria Rovers Rugby League club and as part of the training, introduced a risk assessment process to identify their biggest safety risks and reduce these risks. They identified coaching standards, a poor playing surface and an unsafe grandstand as the key priority areas for their action plan. The club campaigned to their local council about the serious risk the grandstand railing posed to the safety of sports participants and spectators. Within one week of their approach the council installed a wire barrier which removed the risk. The club also appointed a sports safety officer and has included sports safety as a standing item for all committee meetings. Congratulations to the Alexandria Rovers for their efforts in the area of sports safety.
We would love to hear about the safety improvements that your club has made. Click here |
